Announcement Videos

What is it?

An announcement video provides timely updates throughout the course.

Why should I do it?

Announcement videos provide an opportunity to establish social and teaching presence in the course. Announcement videos should be used strategically and consistently. Use this approach as a weekly kick-off or check-in and to direct student to essential content; do not incorporate essential content into announcement videos.

What tools do I need?

  • webcam/microphone

  • a free recording application

  • free video hosting

What does it look like?

Orientation videos are usually talking head style or screencasts.

How do I organize it?

Use a consistent introductory phrase for video announcements. For example, you may say "good morning, scholars." Once you have introduced your announcement, things will vary depending on what you need to cover. It's important to keep things brief and then once you are finished

Use the text area of the announcement tool in your LMS to encourage students to watch the video. It is a good idea to also provide a text synopsis of your video.

Announcement Video Template

Announcement Video Template: 1. Use a greeting that signals that this is an announcement (use consistently); 2. Provide announcement; 3. Explain what students should do after viewing; 4. Provide a deadline for action items if necessary; 5. Use a closing that signals that the announcement is over (use consistently)
  • Course announcements add an element of personalization to the course, create video announcements new every time.

  • Keep these videos brief – detailed information should be incorporated into course content.
